Comparative Column Sources

Article 1

Article 2

Article 3

Matthew O’Brien, an economics and business writer of The Atlantic, uses a different type of source in each of these three articles. In the first article, the longest of the three by a significant margin, cites several official sources, reflecting his attempt to appeal to a economically savvy audience interested in international issues. In the shorter second article, he cites fewer and less formal sources, including the popular TV show Law and Order, betraying his intent to write for a more casual audience. Finally, in the still shorter third article, he cites principally and almost exclusively a simple chart, implying an audience even less aware of or interested in economic technicalities.
